This isn’t just her story—it’s a thank-you to the village that raised her and a love letter to the helpers still fighting to make a difference.
In this heartfelt and unflinchingly honest memoir, Learning the Heart Work traces her journey not by timeline but by turning points—through the voices, moments, and mentors who shaped her. She weaves together stories of family, community, school, friendship, and faith, honoring the village that molded her and the everyday helpers who left lasting marks.
For educators, social workers, counselors, or anyone simply trying to do good in a system that often makes it hard, this memoir is for you. Each chapter opens with a powerful lesson and closes with a reflective question. For those who feel unseen, burned out, or boxed in, it is a call back to purpose: You are not alone. You are part of someone’s village, and you matter too.
About the Author
What began as a goal to change the world at the University of Illinois became a quiet journey of learning that true change takes time. Tiffany Gholson has spent three decades in education—earning her Master of Social Work and Ph.D. in Educational Policy Studies—and practicing social work and advocacy across child welfare settings, school districts, universities, juvenile prisons, and non-profits. When she isn’t in sweet home Chicago enjoying good food, she can usually be found with her toes in the sand, a book in her hand, or dancing like nobody’s watching.
